Alexandros had awoken early that day. It was reaping day, and he was always awake early on reaping day. Well, he was awake early on most days, but on this day, he was always awake really early. He would always wake early, and dress before heading out of the house, where he would wonder the streets for a few hours before he would head back home.
He didn’t really have a specific route that he would take, but he would always end up in the field just outside the District’s fence. He would hours in the field. When he was there, he would an assortment of things. It depended on how he was feeling. Sometimes he would take his knives and train a bit. Usually by using his throwing knife to take an animal, before using his survival knife to skin, cut, gut and clean the animal. He would then make a small fire, before roasting the animal and eating it. He would always save a little bit which he would then take home and give to his mother.
Other times, he would just lay there and think. Usually about the Games, and the Capitol, and how much he hated them both. If it wasn’t for the Games, he would still have his brother. His brother had been chosen for the games two years ago, and had been killed on the third day by the Male Tribute from District Four. When that had happened, he had made a silent vow that if he was reaped for the games, then he would make sure to win.
As always, after a couple of hours in the field, Alex decided that it was time to head home. He was sure that his mother would be awake by now, and she would be very grateful for the meat that Alex had managed to capture. He wrapped it up in a leaf, and carefully made his back to his house.
As he had guessed, his mother was awake, and she had a tub a bowl of warm water waiting for him, so that he could at least make himself look respectable. He left the meat on the table, before grabbing a cloth and scrubbed his face and hands clean, and when he turned around to grab his reaping clothes, he found the meat gone and his mother with the bone in her hand. She gave him a small thank you, before handing him his shirt and trousers.
As it neared two, they two of them left the house, and headed into the square, where Alex was placed with the other 15 year olds. Once the clock struck two, the mayor stood up, and delivered his usual speech, starting with how Panem came about, and ending with the usual Treaty of Treason, which detailed how, as punishment for rebelling, each of the twelve districts was forced to give up one male and one female tribute each year, to be trained for the hunger games.
And then, it was time. The District Escort stood up, and headed over to the table where the bowls of names stood waiting. As was custom, he dipped his hand into the female bowl first, and called out, ” Sunshine Corazon” Alex watched as the girl slowly made her way to the podium, before the Escort then dipped his hand into the male bowl, where Alex knew that fifteen slips bore the name Alexandros Metaxas And then it happened. The paper was pulled out, and unfolded, and the name was called: ”Alexandros Metaxas” For that instance, it was almost like time had stood still, but it soon came crashing back down, as Alex felt his arms being gripped by two peacekeepers, and the pushed him towards the podium. Once there, the Escort turned to each of them, before turning back to the crowd and saying ”And there they are ladies and Gentlemen. You District Six Tributes, Alexandros Metaxas and Sunshine Corazon. And may the odds be ever in you favour”
